I have heard countless times: I used to love Math, then everything changed!
At some point, being "smart" wasn't enough, and your old tricks — aka coping strategies — stopped working. When the subject gets more complicated (multi-step equations, for example), you didn't know what to do. You've always been the first to get new concepts, but suddenly you're not so sure anymore. And the next thing you know, you feel dumb, which is a first, and you don't know how to handle it.
Your kid doesn't hate Math, they hate feeling dumb in Math class.
Math Anxiety is Real! (I am not a doctor, or even pretending to be.)
Anxiety is often created in situations of confusion, isolation, and overwhelm.

Confusion
What is this question even asking?

Isolation
I must be the only one who
doesn't get it...

Overwhelm
Can I read my notes?
Will they even help? How do I start?
That's where I come in. Through a series of meetings and math lessons, I will get to know the student and their needs. I do not use standardized tests or methods. We will discover together how they learn Math best. This is a highly individualized process and can take time. If the student is not motivated, this won't work very well.
Students will:
-
Learn coping strategies for math anxiety
-
Practice taking notes and doing assignments in a way that works for them
